NE Support Centre Condemns Connaught Place Restrobar Molestation

Exemplary Punishment Demanded

NE Helpline Extends to Gender-Based Violence and Anti-Trafficking Initiative

New Delhi, August 31, 2010

North East Support Centre Condemns the Connaught Place Restrobar molestation and demands Law enforcement authority to act for exemplary punishment. Panic spread across Delhi and NCR among North East Indian girls working in unorganized sectors.

According to source reaching to North East Support Centre, New Delhi, Ms. Archana (name changed) from Manipur was working at Restrobar at L Block Connaught Place, New Delhi for the past three months was alone on first floor watching TV and the manager of the Restrobar abused sexually, pushed from chair and attacked with fork on August 29. When she alarmed, other staff of the Restrobar came in her rescue. She suffered injuries on her neck with fork and medical examination conducted at Ram Lohiya Memorial Hospital, New Delhi. A case of molestation registered against the manager.

Mr. Madhu Chandra, Spokes person of North East Support Centre, New Delhi, says, “Racial and gender-based violence against girls from North East India goes unprecedented in Delhi and NCR for last five years. There is panic spread among the North East girls working in non-organized private sectors. Until and unless exemplary action to punish the perpetuators, the gender-based violence faced by the people from North East India will not stop.”

NE Helpline records 75 crimes committed against people from North East India living in Delhi and NCR. Only 43% of the crimes registered in police stations while 57% cases not registered in police crime record. The molestation cases is 35%, rape 4%, beating girls 8%, murder 5%, attempt rape 1%, and misbehave 4%.

North East Support Centre also appeals public to be aware of false promised of jobs offering to young girls and boys and free education for children. There have been reports of many young girls and boys from North East Indian states, where boys and girls were trafficked with false promise of jobs and free education.

“What worries more now apart from Racial/Gender-based violence is the fear of human trafficking targeted North East girls, particularly related to upcoming Commonwealth Games in October,” says Mr. Chandra.

North East Support Centre & Helpline merged with Pratigya – Anti-Human Trafficking Initiative of Operation Mercy India Foundation and other human rights agencies dealing with human trafficking challenges. Soon a helpline number will be provided, where the gender-based violence and human trafficking related issues could be contacted for help.

North East Support Centre & Helpline (www.nehelpline.net) is combined initiative of various human rights activists, social workers, students, journalists and lawyers seeking to prevent harassment and abuses meted out to women, North East People and tribal communities of different states.
