A Study Reveals that 86% of North East People Face Racial Discrimination

 

North East Support Centre & Helpline (NESC&H) releases 2009 report on racial discrimination. 2009 recorded highest crime against north east communities in Delhi and NCR. A Study reveals that 86% of North East People living in Delhi and NCR face racial discrimination.

 

2009 Recorded Highest Crime

 

NESC&H keeps the records of racial discrimination meted out to the people from North East India living in Delhi and NCR from mid 2005. The story of racial discrimination begins with painful episode of gang rape in a moving car in Dhaula Kuan, south Delhi on May 8, 2005. The case of racial discrimination face by north east communities remains unheard to any authority and law enforcement till a 19 year old Naga girl was murdered in her Murnika resident by an IIT Ph. D scholar. The story does not end there, rather raised the crime to the peak. These uncontrolled racial attacks on north east communities, particularly to young girls have made them feel unsafe in Delhi and NCR.

NESC&H recorded 70 cases of racial discrimination meted out to north east people living in Delhi and NCR from 2005 till date. The crime record was 55.70% in 2009 alone, which includes two gruesome killings. A 7-year-old Naga girl was raped, murdered, and thrown into a water tank on the terrace on April 17 2009. The accused is absconding and justice remains denied till today. A 19-year-old Naga girl was attempted rape and murdered when she refused to yield to sex favour demanded by IIT Ph. D. candidate on October 25 2009.

 

Year wise distribution of Racial Discrimination

 

 

Delhi government and police remains a silent spectator and waited until the murder of 19-years-old Naga girl which is a wake up call to the racial attack face by north east communities. Chief Minister Sheila Dixit and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh came forward by instructing that stringent action would be taken up to stop racial discrimination. Assurance given to the north east communities still remains up in the air as racial attack still continues. Inactive action of Delhi police official in dealing with the cases related to north east communities is very discouraging.  Only 38.60% cases are filed in police stations and nobody knows whether police have taken any action against the perpetrators. If the Delhi police is honest and concern in handling the issues face by north east communities, they should give white paper on all the cases registered in police stations and cases taken up in courts and given verdicts.

 

86% of North Easterners Face Racial Discrimination in the Capital

 

A pilot study conducted by NESC&H reveals that 86% of North East communities living in Delhi and NCR face racial discrimination. The study was conducted by selecting samples of north easterners living in North Delhi, South Delhi and Gurgaon.

 

Only 14% says that they did not face racial discrimination but they face people calling them chinkies, Nepalis, free culture and strangers, which they did not consider racial discrimination. Half of those who said that they did not face racial discrimination are people who have been in Delhi for less than two years.

 

The other 86% who said that they face racial discrimination in various forms like molestation, physical assault, misbehave, teasing, calling chinkies and passing vulgar remarks, have lived in Delhi or NCR for more than two years. The study reveals that the longer they stay in Delhi they are likely to say that they face racial discrimination.
